Hokies Gain Momentum in 31-7 Road Lashing of Stanford
Despite CFP hopes in the offseason, overextended expectations, and some growing pains in non-conference play, the week 6 matchup at Stanford Stadium could not have been more unwrinkled for the Hokies. Hokie faithful have been waiting for a complete game with little heartburn and they finally delivered.
Stanford opened the game driving the ball efficiently; but just as the Cardinal looked determined on offense, our Hokies began to burst on defense. This would be the start of an impressive stat line for our defense:
-
- 5.0 sacks
- 1.0 tackles for loss
- 2 INTs
- 2 forced fumbles
Defensive Coordinator Chris Marve deserves his dang praises. His unit was prepared, hungry, and executed at an elevated level.
Hokies Offense
Let's talk VT offense which had been a little Jekyll and Hyde-like throughout the first five games. Our featured ground God, Bhayshul Tuten, accounted for 73 yards and a trip to the endzone - which is a light day's work for the star running back. Tuten has been the most consistent offensive threat since the season began if we're being open and honest.
Not only did the first half go smoothly, but the Hokies would open up the second half on offense and come out swinging. Featuring a nice mixture of play calls on the ground and through the air, Drones to Felton would be the premier highlight of the 3rd quarter. Quarterback Kyron Drones would conclude the day with 201 yards including three scores-two through the air and one he ran in himself.
A trick play by Stanford’s RB Micah Ford tossing the rock to Elic Ayomanor in the endzone would account for their only points of the afternoon.
"...Drones to Felton would be the premier highlight of the 3rd quarter."
Another notable accolade for Tech? Unless you live under a rock you have just come to expect the silly, avoidable mistakes over the years - the opening month of this season underscoring this trend. Well check out this stat from David Cunningham with Tech Sideline:
Pry and his squad get a timely bye before they get a pair of games at Lane versus Boston College and Georgia Tech, respectively. Let's hope the momentum and consistent play carry over to the back half of this 2024 season.
